The range at a glance

Start With the Fishing, Not the Price

Choose Shimano fishing reels and rods by technique first. Rod action, reel gearing, drag, line class and lure or sinker weight all need to suit the job before they suit each other. The most expensive outfit isn't automatically the right one: a swordfish rig won't help on the Swan, and a light spin combo won't stop a big fish in deep water.

Shimano Combos: Factory Packs and Our Own Matched Outfits

Sienna, FX, Nexave, Symetre and Hyperloop are Shimano's own factory combos. The rest are outfits our team has put together, pairing Shimano game, casting and electric reels with rods and line we'd fish ourselves. Some use Shimano rods; others use Wilson, Oceans Legacy or Assassin rods where they're the better match.

Spin combos for estuary, jetty and beach

• Sienna: an affordable first outfit or spare, in 1000–4000 sizes, including a 762 Egi squid version.
• FX: the lowest-priced Shimano factory combo, for lakes, rivers and light coastal fishing.
• Nexave: the step up for anyone fishing more than a handful of times a year. You get a smoother reel and a better-matched blank.
• Symetre: where we'd spend the extra if it's going to be fished hard. Go 2500HG for bream and whiting, or 4000HG and 902SP for flathead, tailor and salmon.
• Hyperloop: Shimano's budget pre-spooled spin combo, in 6ft boat, 7–8ft general-purpose and 10–12ft surf lengths.

For most Perth estuary fishing, a 2.1m (7ft) rod with a 2500–3000 reel covers bream, whiting and flathead. Step up to a 4000 for heavier estuary, beach and inshore work.

Offshore jigging

• Stella SWD 10000HG / Extraction 6102SP50-80: a PE5–8 spin outfit for heavy jigging, live-baiting and big reef and pelagic fish. It comes with a 400m spool of Ocea 8 PE5 in the box.

Game and swordfish

• TLD 50LRSA / Wilson Live Fibre Stroker 24–37kg, spooled with Momoi 24kg: an accessible 24kg (50lb) class outfit for trolling and live-baiting tuna, marlin and larger mackerel.
• Swordfish combos: all three use the same reel, a 25 Talica 40A-II or 50A-II two-speed lever-drag, spooled with 1000m of 80lb Kairiki. The choice is the rod: Tag-Em Sword is the entry swordfish rod, Tiagra Hyper Sword steps up to a better blank and a carbon butt, and Talica Spiral Game is a custom, upmarket limited release.

Electric and deep drop

• Plays 4000A / Oceans Legacy Deep Element: the most accessible way into electric fishing, for moderate depths.
• Forcemaster 9000 / Status Bent Butt PE5–8: the practical deep-drop outfit for most WA anglers chasing demersals (dhufish, pink snapper, baldchin groper, breaksea cod).
• Beastmaster 9000B: the same rod, with a brushless motor and heat-managed drag for more power and stamina on repeated drops.
• Beastmaster MD 12000 / Status Elite Deep Drop 662: the heavyweight, with 43kg of drag and PE8 capacity.
• Also in the range: a Forcemaster / Tag-Em Sword electric sword outfit, and drone outfits built on Forcemaster (Oceans Legacy BackLine Big Bait Special) or Beastmaster 9000B (Assassin Vector Drone).

Choose electric gear on depth, sinker weight, line capacity and target species, not the biggest model on the wall.

Does the combo come with line?

Check each listing:

• Hyperloop comes pre-spooled.
• The swordfish and TLD outfits come spooled.
• The Stella SWD / Extraction outfit includes braid in the box.
• Sienna reels come unspooled.

We give free line spooling when you buy your line in-store for the reel, and we also spool from bulk line.

Shimano Lures and Squid Jigs

Pick the presentation first. A stickbait worked stop-and-go and a popper throwing spray might be cast at the same tuna school, but they fish very differently.

Stickbaits and poppers

• Ocea Head Dip, our biggest Shimano lure family: a floating stickbait (140F, 175F, 200F, plus a 175HS sinker) that dives on the jerk and sits head-up on the pause. Built for bait-ball tuna and kingfish.
• Ocea Pencil:
  • The 115HS is a 42g heavy-sinking stickbait for distance and a wobble on the drop.
  • The 145F, 160F Scaleboost and 220F float, with a wide S-action.
• Ocea Bubble Dip 220F and Bomb Dip 170F: popper-style lures for surface-feeding fish. The Bubble Dip also dives like a stickbait.
• Ocea Sardine Ball 130S/150S: a sinking, long-casting baitfish profile for fish feeding under bait balls.

In WA, that means kingfish and samsonfish around Rottnest and offshore, tuna on the bait, and GT at Exmouth and further north.

Rock and shore

• Coltsniper Rock Pop Slim 140F pops, dives and walks the dog from one lure.
• Gabbro 175 has near-vertical buoyancy for rough water.
• Rockflat 150S is a slow-sinking pencil.

Use them for tailor, salmon, and kingfish or samsonfish where they push in close.

Bream and estuary

• Bantam Pavlo Shad (52SP, 59SP) and Bantam Enber 60SP suspend on the pause, which is often what gets a pressured Swan River bream to commit.
• Bantam Ligen 66F works shallow flats.
• Undulator 88F is a lipless vibe whose top tow point helps it bump over rock and snags.
• Strong Assassin 125F steps up for bigger estuary fish.

Trolling

• Ledge Runner's Adjustable Depth Range lets one lure run shallower or deeper for Spanish mackerel, wahoo, tuna and mahi mahi.

Squid jigs (egi)

• Sephia Clinch Flash Boost comes in three sizes:
  • 2.5 for shallow weed flats, calm water and smaller squid.
  • 3.0 as the all-rounder over Perth weed beds.
  • 3.5 for deeper water, wind, current and bigger squid.
• Long Appeal Jet Boost is the long-casting version.
• Sepy Flash Boost (1.8 and 2.2) suits ultra-light eging.

Pair them with a Symetre or Sienna 762 Egi combo, or a Revolution Travel 764EGI rod.

FLASH BOOST and SCALEBOOST

FLASH BOOST is a mirror plate mounted on tiny springs inside the lure. It keeps flickering after you stop working the lure, so it still attracts fish on the pause, drift or sink, which is exactly when squid and pelagics often strike. You'll find it in Ocea Head Dip FlashBoost, Sardine Ball 150S, Bettyu Hiramasa, Undulator, Sephia Clinch and Sepy. SCALEBOOST is a hologram finish that mimics real baitfish scales, as on the Ocea Pencil 160F Scaleboost.
