Why use a de-hooker?
De-hookers remove hooks without handling the fish — better for fish survival in catch-and-release, safer for you (no contact with teeth/spines), and faster than pliers for deep-hooked fish.
What type of de-hooker?
T-bar style for general use, pistol-grip for deep hooks, and long-shaft for toothy species. A basic T-bar de-hooker handles most Perth fishing situations.
Are de-hookers required by law?
Not legally required but strongly recommended. De-hookers significantly improve survival rates of released fish, especially deep-hooked ones that would be damaged by plier extraction.
How to use a de-hooker?
Slide the de-hooker shaft down the leader, engage the hook bend, then twist/push to free the hook. The fish can often be released without leaving the water. Practice makes perfect — it becomes second nature quickly.
