Serving Australian Anglers Since 1993
Founded in 1993, Compleat Angler Nedlands has grown from a trusted local Perth fishing tackle store into a premier destination for anglers nationwide. While our physical store remains a staple of the WA fishing community, our expanding online range brings thousands of the best products directly to anglers across Australia.
Over the years, we have helped customers prepare for everything from local estuary and freshwater fishing to remote northern trips, offshore expeditions and international fishing adventures.
Some customers are buying their first rod and reel, while others are building highly specialised setups for jigging, game fishing, squid, barra, trout or reef fishing. With over 200 years of combined staff fishing experience, we are constantly updating and expanding our product range to fit our customers' needs.
As a trusted seller for premium brands like Shimano and Oceans Legacy, alongside Daiwa, Vexed, Yamaga Blanks, Irukandji and Ripple Fisher, we offer gear suited to a wide range of fishing styles, species and conditions all across Australia.
How to Choose the Right Fishing Gear
Selecting the right setup can make all the difference between a quiet day on the water and an epically successful trip. Because no single setup does it all, matching your tackle to your catch and your environment is essential.
Matching Rod & Reel Combos by Fishing Style
One of the most common questions we receive is whether one rod and reel setup can cover multiple styles of fishing. For beginners and casual anglers, a versatile light or medium spinning setup can be a practical starting point. More experienced customers often build separate outfits for specific techniques, species and locations.
Light-spin outfits in the 1–3kg or 2–4kg range paired with around a 2500 size reel are well suited to bream, flathead, whiting and other light estuary fishing. They're also great fun from the rock groynes and metro beaches chasing your bread and butter species like herring, skippy and whiting. Egi-specific rods paired with smooth 2500-size reels provide the tip control and casting distance needed for squid jigging. Customers preparing for offshore jigging, heavy casting, deep-dropping or game fishing generally require heavier equipment designed to handle larger fish, stronger currents, bigger lures and greater drag pressure.
Choosing Line, Braid, and Leader
Customers regularly ask whether they should use braid or monofilament, what breaking strain they need, and which leader will suit the areas they fish. The right combination depends on the target species, structure, water depth and fishing technique.
Anglers looking for greater casting distance and bite sensitivity often choose braid, while monofilament can still be useful where additional stretch is beneficial. Fluorocarbon leader is commonly used around reef, rocks and structure because of its abrasion resistance and low visibility in the water.
Line & Leader Quick Reference
Lures & Terminal Tackle Basics
Customers often come to us looking for a single lure that will work everywhere, but the best option depends on the species, water depth, conditions and feeding behaviour on the day. Many experienced anglers carry a mix of soft plastics, hardbody lures, metal jigs and squid jigs so they can adjust when conditions change.
Terminal tackle is just as important. Hooks, split rings, swivels, sinkers and leaders should all be matched to the target species and the strength of the rest of the setup. A weak connection or undersized component can become the point of failure when a larger fish is hooked.

Frequently Asked Questions About Fishing, Tackle, and Everything In-Between!
What makes Compleat Angler Nedlands one of Australia's best online fishing stores?
Our strength lies in our breadth of range, fast dispatch, and decades of practical experience. Established in 1993, we carry gear for every style of fishing – from estuary fishing to heavy offshore game and everything in between – stocking leading global brands alongside exclusive dealership ranges that other retailers simply cannot offer.
Do you ship fishing tackle Australia-wide?
Yes. We deliver fishing gear to anglers all across Australia. Orders over $150 (under 3kg weight/cubic weight) qualify for free standard shipping; under that, standard shipping is $12.99 and express is $16.99 for orders under 3kg. Orders over 3kg or to remote areas may incur an extra charge — we'll contact you if that's the case. Orders placed before 1pm AWST are dispatched same-day from our Nedlands store to ensure your fishing gear arrives before your next trip.
What is the difference between shopping with Compleat Angler Nedlands and other tackle stores?
Unlike stores with restricted stock lists or limited brand agreements, we hold full WA dealership rights for premium brands like Shimano and Oceans Legacy alongside full ranges from Daiwa, Vexed, Ripple Fisher, Yamaga Blanks, and Penn plus many more. Our staff are active anglers offering expert advice across all styles of fishing, not just single specialties.
What fishing gear do beginners need to get started?
A versatile setup is the best starting point for beginners. A balanced 1–3kg or 2–4kg rod paired with a 1000 to 2500 size spinning reel spooled with 6lb–10lb braided line and a 6–12lb leader allows you to fish estuaries, jetties, and beaches effectively. Add a basic terminal tackle kit (hooks, sinkers, swivels) or a selection of versatile lures to increase your success rate and start catching right away!
Can I buy online and pick up in-store in Nedlands?
Yes. During checkout, simply select the Click & Collect option. Our team will prepare your order at our Nedlands store and notify you as soon as it's ready. When you come to collect it, just bring your order number and a photo ID.
What brands of fishing tackle do you stock?
We stock an extensive lineup of over 150 top fishing brands including Shimano, Oceans Legacy, Daiwa, Vexed Fishing, Yamaga Blanks, Ripple Fisher, Penn, Atomic, BKK, Irukandji, Mustad, Owner, Sunline, Varivas, ChaseBaits, Assassin, Gomexus, Yeti, MC Works and many more.
Do you offer expert advice on choosing the right gear?
Absolutely. Whether you need help matching a reel to a rod, selecting line classes for specific species, or choosing the right lures for seasonal fishing (like the best squid jigs or estuary lures for bream and flathead), our experienced team is available via phone, email, or in-store to assist.
What is your returns and exchange policy?
For a refund, unused items in original condition can be returned within 30 days of delivery. This excludes sale, clearance, and used items, and shipping and handling costs aren't refunded. If you'd prefer to exchange instead, you have 2 weeks from delivery to arrange it, provided the item is unopened with tags and packaging intact – return shipping for exchanges is covered by the buyer. Simply email sales@compleatanglernedlands.com.au and we'll guide you through the process.
Do you price match?
Yes. If you find an identical, in-stock item advertised at a lower price by another Australian-based fishing tackle retailer (this excludes marketplaces like eBay and Amazon), send us the retailer's link along with the item's exact model, size, and colour. We'll verify the price, stock availability, and freight cost, and confirm the match – usually within 24 hours. Must be an existing brick and mortar store, not just online.
