Assist Cords
Quality assist cord for building jig hook setups from Compleat Angler Nedlands. Brands include BKK, Decoy, Xesta, Platypus, Angler Tackle, and Vexed — braided assist cord in various strengths for micro jigs through to heavy offshore jigs.
Stiff cord keeps hooks clear of the jig body; soft cord allows natural movement.

Stiff vs soft assist cord?
Stiff holds hooks away from jig body (reduces tangles, better hook position for speed jigging). Soft allows freer movement (better for slow-pitch where natural hook motion matters).
What breaking strain assist cord?
Match to target species. Inshore (snapper, breaksea): 80-150lb. Heavy jigging (samson, amberjack): 200-400lb. Never let cord be the weakest link.
Make my own or buy pre-made assists?
Both work. Pre-made (BKK, Decoy, Vexed) are convenient and consistent. DIY lets you customise length, hook, and cord for specific applications. Serious jiggers often tie their own.
How long should assist cord be?
Total assist length (cord + hook) should be 1/2 to 2/3 the jig length. Too long = tangles; too short = missed bites.
