When do I need a ball-bearing swivel?
For applications with high rotation — trolling, spinning lures that twist line, and jigging. Ball-bearing swivels spin more freely under load than standard barrel swivels.
What size swivel?
Match to your line class. Don't use oversized swivels that spook fish. For most Perth fishing, size 4-1 covers light to medium applications. Heavier for game fishing.
Do I always need a swivel?
No — for lure fishing, most anglers tie directly or use a snap. Swivels add weight and a potential failure point. Use them when line twist is an issue (trolling, certain lures) or for bait rigs.
Are cheap swivels OK?
For light fishing, budget swivels are fine. For anything fighting decent fish, invest in quality — a failed swivel loses you a fish, leader, and lure.
