Monofilament
Monofilament remains a staple for many WA fishing applications — surf fishing, trolling, and overhead reels. Compleat Angler Nedlands stocks mono from Shimano, Black Magic, Momoi, and Angler Tackle in various breaking strains and spool sizes.
Mono's stretch acts as shock absorber during hard-running fish, and its diameter gives abrasion resistance. Also the go-to for reel backing and trolling where stretch prevents hook pulls.

When should I use mono instead of braid?
Mono excels for trolling, surf fishing with overhead reels, as backing, and for beginners (less prone to wind knots). Also when stretch is beneficial for preventing hook pulls.
How long does mono last?
Degrades with UV. Replace every 6-12 months if left in sun. Check for brittleness — if it snaps easily between fingers, it's time for fresh line.
What pound mono for Perth beach fishing?
10-15lb for general beach fishing (tailor, herring, whiting). 20-30lb for mulloway or sharks. 15-20lb is a good all-rounder for overhead Alvey-style reels.
Can I use mono as leader with braid?
Yes — mono makes a fine leader for bait fishing where stretch is beneficial. Cheaper than fluoro. Use fluoro when invisibility matters (clear water, lure fishing).
