Baitcaster Reels
Baitcaster reels offer precision casting and direct lure contact — the choice of serious lure anglers. Compleat Angler Nedlands stocks baitcasters from Daiwa, Abu Garcia, and 13 Fishing, from finesse BFS models through to heavy-duty casting reels.
Modern baitcasters feature advanced braking systems making them far easier to learn than older models. Whether you're flicking soft plastics for black bream in the Swan River or cranking swimbaits, we have the right baitcaster for the job.

Are baitcaster reels good for beginners?
Modern baitcasters with magnetic or centrifugal braking are much easier than older models, but still require practice. If you're completely new, start with a spinning reel. If you already fish and want more accuracy, a baitcaster is a great next step.
What's BFS and do I need it?
BFS (Bait Finesse System) — ultra-light baitcasters casting lures as light as 1-5g. Fantastic for targeting bream and flathead with small soft plastics in Perth's estuaries. If you love finesse fishing, BFS is incredibly fun.
What gear ratio baitcaster should I choose?
7.0-7.5:1 is versatile for general lure fishing. Higher ratios (8.0:1+) suit jerkbaits. Lower ratios (6.0-6.5:1) provide more torque for crankbaits and swimbaits.
How do I avoid bird's nests?
Start with brakes turned up high and gradually reduce as your thumb control improves. Practice in an open area first. Match lure weight to rod rating, and always thumb the spool at cast's end.
