What's the difference between leader and tippet?

A leader is a tapered piece of mono/fluoro that transfers energy from the fly line to the fly for accurate casting. Tippet is un-tapered material you add to extend the leader or replace the fine tip section.

What strength tippet for bream on fly?

8-12lb (3X-1X) fluorocarbon tippet for bream. Strong enough to turn them from structure but light enough not to spook them. Fluoro is preferred for its near-invisibility.

How often should I replace my leader?

Replace when the taper is shortened (from re-tying flies) or when the butt section is damaged. Adding tippet extends leader life significantly. Most anglers replace leaders every few sessions.

Fluorocarbon or nylon tippet?

Fluoro for saltwater and clear water (less visible, sinks). Nylon for dry fly fishing (floats, more supple) and when budget matters. Both work — fluoro is preferred for Perth saltwater.
