Rubber mesh vs nylon nets?
Rubber mesh is far better for fish health — doesn't remove slime coat, doesn't tangle hooks, and fish can't get gill-wrapped. Slightly heavier but worth it for anyone practicing catch-and-release.
What net for kayak fishing?
A compact, short-handled net with rubber mesh. Foldable or collapsible options save space. Ensure the hoop is big enough for your target species — nothing worse than a net that's too small.
When do I need a gaff?
For large fish you intend to keep — tuna, kingfish, etc. — where a net won't fit them. Never gaff a fish you plan to release. Gaffs are primarily for boat fishing.
What length net handle?
From a boat deck, 1-2m is usually sufficient. From a jetty or elevated platform, longer handles (3-4m+) may be needed. Telescopic handles offer versatility.
