Should I use braid or mono as main line?

Braid is the go-to for most modern fishing — thinner, casts further, zero stretch for better bite detection, and lasts longer. Mono still has its place for surf fishing, trolling, and where stretch is beneficial. Most Perth anglers use braid with a leader.

What's the difference between fluorocarbon and mono leader?

Fluorocarbon is nearly invisible underwater, sinks faster, and is more abrasion-resistant — ideal for clear water and lure fishing. Mono is more supple, cheaper, and has stretch that helps when fighting fish.

How often should I change my fishing line?

Replace braid annually if used regularly, or when faded/fuzzy. Check leaders every session — replace when nicked. Mono main line degrades with UV — replace every few months of regular use.

What leader strength should I use?

General rule: 2-4x your braid breaking strain. PE1 (20lb) braid with 30-40lb leader works for most inshore fishing. Heavier near reef structure. Lighter (8-12lb) for clear-water bream.
