Do shark deterrents actually work?
Magnetic and electrical deterrents have been scientifically tested and shown to reduce the likelihood of shark interactions. They're not 100% guarantees but provide an additional layer of protection backed by research.
Sharkbanz vs electrical deterrents?
Sharkbanz uses permanent magnets (no charging needed, always on). Electrical deterrents (like RPELX) create an active electrical field. Both have proven effectiveness — magnets are simpler; electrical may have wider effective range.
Should I wear one while fishing?
If you're wading, kayak fishing, or swimming in areas with known shark activity — which is much of WA's coastline — a deterrent provides peace of mind. Particularly relevant for wading anglers and spearfishers.
How do magnetic shark deterrents work?
Sharks have electroreceptors (Ampullae of Lorenzini) in their snouts. Strong magnets overwhelm these sensors at close range, creating an unpleasant sensation that deters investigative approaches. The effect is localised to within 1-2 metres.
