Choosing a Daiwa Rod

Pick the family by technique, then the model by lure or jig weight and line class. A TD Commander and a Saltiga J are both top rods, but they're built for completely different jobs. Saltiga J isn't a better TD Commander, and Wilderness isn't a better Sensor Sandstorm.

Light & Estuary Rods

The TD ladder:

• TD Hyper (HVF Nanoplus, X45, Fuji anti-tangle guides) is the value workhorse from fresh to salt.
• TD Black is Daiwa's largest Australian light-tackle range, 36 models from King George whiting to swimbaits. It's the all-round estuary pick.
• TD Commander steps up to SVF Nanoplus with X45X Full Shield and a combined Fuji titanium SiC and AGS guide train.
• TD Battler AGS is the flagship: SVF Compile-X Nanoplus, 3DX and full AGS guides.

Infeet is Daiwa Australia's dedicated bream family:

• Infeet S is the entry point.
• Infeet BF is bait-finesse baitcast.
• Infeet SK and Infeet Z step up.
• Infeet EX uses SVF Compile-X with Megatop solid-tip models.
• Infeet IL LTD is the Dry Interline rod, with the line running through the blank.

Squid Rods

Emeraldas X covers the popular egi sizes, #1.8 to #4.0, on a snappy Braiding-X blank. Emeraldas V steps up to HVF with X45, Air Slash reel seats and Fuji SiC guides. The 2.51–2.59m (8'3"–8'6") models suit most land-based squid spots around Perth.

Surf & Shore Casting Rods

Surf: Crossfire Surf is the entry surf rod. Sensor Wave (Braiding-X) handles both lure spinning and bait. Sensor Sandstorm (HVF with X45) is the value all-rounder. Saltiga Surf is the flagship, with full-length 3DX and X45X Full Shield reinforcement and Fuji SiC guides for distance and fast recovery, plus a Slide model. For general beach fishing, about 3.0–3.7m is a practical start. Go to 4.0m or longer when you need maximum distance, heavier sinkers or clearance over the break, as on the south-west beaches during the salmon and mulloway runs.

Shore casting: Seabass is built for metals and lures at tailor and mulloway off the rocks. Seajigger adds distance for heavier shore casting. Dragger X brings shore jigging and plugging in at an accessible price; its SLSJ models suit 30g metals on tailor. Dragger SX and Dragger Break Through step up to stickbaits and poppers for kingfish, tuna and mackerel from the rocks.

Offshore & Jigging Rods

Reef and general boat: Saltist and Saltist X are HVF and Braiding-X workhorses for demersals (dhufish, pink snapper, baldchin groper, breaksea cod) and reef jigging. BG Bluewater is the budget heavy option. TD Saltwater is an affordable Braiding-X range covering reef soft plastics, tai-rubber, general boat work and entry-level jigging (S56, SJ66 and BJ66). Saltiga LC is built for deep-water and casting soft plastics, with Plug Special models for small stickbaits.

Heavy sportfishing: Demon Blood is a heavy jig-and-cast range with a red 3DX-reinforced butt for samsonfish, kingfish and pelagics. Spartan (X45X, HVF Nanoplus) covers plastics, jigging and stickbaits.

Pelagic casting: Saltiga C Dogfight is a dedicated tuna casting rod. Saltiga Break Through (SVF Compile-X, PE8) is for stickbaits and poppers at GTs, yellowfin and Spanish mackerel up north.

Jigging: Outrage X (Braiding-X) and Outrage MX (HVF Nanoplus) are slow jigging rods from PE2 to PE5, in spin and overhead. DB Solid has a solid-carbon slow jig blank. Saltiga SJ is Daiwa Australia's premium slow jig rod on SVF Nanoplus. Saltiga Longfall is built for long-fall jigging over deep reef, and Saltiga J for mechanical jigging on samsonfish and amberjack.

Electric & Deep Drop Rods

Seaborg rods (with the Winthrop Adjusta-Butt) and the softer Glatech-blank Tanacom Z and Seapower are built to sit in a gunwale holder under a big dendoh reel. Tanacom X is the value option. Seaborg DG and Leobritz DG are shorter handheld rods for the smaller 300–500 size electric reels. The Saltist 56HT Dendoh comes in solid-tip and swivel-tip versions.

Travel Rods

Wilderness has multi-piece V-Joint Alpha blanks on HVF Nanoplus, from trout to Papuan black bass. Wilderness X takes TD Hyper and TD Black actions into 4- and 5-piece pack rods that fit a backpack.

What the Technology Means

HVF (High Volume Fibre) and SVF (Super Volume Fibre) are carbon grades with progressively less resin and more carbon fibre. SVF is lighter and more sensitive for a given strength. Nanoplus is a nano-resin process that raises carbon density further. X45 (and X45X Full Shield) is a 45-degree bias wrap that stops the blank twisting. 3DX adds torsional stiffness where you need lifting power. AGS guides use carbon frames that Daiwa says are 40% lighter than titanium equivalents. The extra cost buys the most on finesse and heavy jigging rods, and less if you only fish a few times a year.
