At Compleat Angler Nedlands we stock egi rods from Yamaga Blanks, Daiwa, Majorcraft, NS Black Hole, Yamashita, Oceans Legacy, and Penn. These rods feature fast tips and parabolic actions needed to impart lifelike movement to your squid jigs while providing enough backbone to control cephalopods at the surface.

What size egi rod do I need for Perth squid fishing?
For shore-based squid fishing around Perth, a 7'6" to 8'6" rod rated for 2.0-3.5 size jigs is ideal. If you're fishing from a boat, you can go shorter at around 7ft for better control.
What's the difference between an egi rod and a regular light spinning rod?
Egi rods have a fast, responsive tip for darting squid jigs naturally, plus a softer mid-section that cushions the squid's tentacle grip and prevents tearing. A regular spinning rod won't give you the same jig action or bite sensitivity.
When is the best time for squid fishing in WA?
Southern calamari are available year-round in Perth waters, but autumn and winter (March to August) are generally best when larger squid move into shallower waters to breed. Dawn and dusk sessions are most productive.
What line should I use with an egi rod?
Use PE 0.4-0.8 braid (4-10lb) as main line with a 6-10lb fluorocarbon leader of about 1-1.5 metres. Thin braid gives better casting distance and jig control, while fluoro leader is nearly invisible to squid.
