Split & Solid Rings

Split rings can be opened (like a keyring) to attach/remove components. Solid rings are welded closed — stronger but need a split ring or clip to attach things. Many setups use both: solid ring on jig, split ring to attach hooks.

Match ring strength to your target species and lure size. Undersized rings can be straightened by big fish. Check manufacturer recommendations. For Perth offshore, err on the side of stronger.

Use split ring pliers — they open the ring safely without bending it. Trying to use fingernails or regular pliers usually damages the ring. Split ring pliers are an essential lure fishing tool.

For light inshore use, stock rings are usually fine. For targeting big fish (tuna, samson, GTs), upgrading to stronger rings is cheap insurance against heartbreaking failures.
